The Tennessee Education Association (TEA) is the largest organization that protects and advances the rights of educational professionals in the state. As part of that mission, it compiles this information on teacher's salaries based on the 2008 to 2009 school year.

  1. Classroom Teachers

    • According to TEA, average teacher salaries vary by school system. The highest paying school system was Oak Ridge City at $57,006. The lowest paying was Carroll County at $37,053.

    Bachelor's Degree

    • According to TEA, for those holding bachelor's degrees and starting at the minimum, Shelby County paid the most at $39,468 while Clay and Hancock Counties paid the least at $29,215 each.

    Master's Degree

    • According to TEA, for those holding master's degrees and starting at the minimum, Memphis City and Shelby County paid the most at $42,669 each. Hancock, Wayne, and Clay Counties, and the Bradford School District paid the least at $35,364 each.

    Doctorate Degree

    • According to TEA, for those holding doctorate degrees and starting at minimum, Alcoa City paid the most at $51,545 while several counties paid the lowest at $39,165 including Carroll, Hancock, Jackson, Scott and Wayne Counties.

    Average

    • For comparison, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median K-12 teacher salary in the United States was $51,180 in May 2008.
