Don't let tanning salons or parlors fool you--tanning is an act just as damaging for your skin as lying in the natural sun, according to the book "Ageless Beauty," by Dr. Steven Victor and Ina Yalof. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Fact

    • Indoor tanning has become hugely popular, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. On average, 1 million people visit tanning salons each day in the United States.

    Identification

    • Indoor tanning subjects a person to UVA (ultraviolet A) and UVB (ultraviolet B) rays. Overexposure to UV rays is known to cause cancer.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Although the AAD does not condone tanning, to protect yourself while outdoors from harmful UVA and UVB rays, the AAD recommends using a lotion with an SPF of 30 or greater.

    Tips

    • To protect your skin, apply the sunscreen at least 15 minutes before hitting the tanning booth. Use about lotion as much as it would take to fill a 1-oz. shot glass. This will allow time for the product to completely absorb into your skin, giving you maximum protection.

    Alternatives

    • Because tanning is so harmful for the skin, consider an alternative, such as a sunless tanner. Many products are available that can simulate the same bronzed look you get from using a tanning bed.
