What Does Vmware Stand For?

There are many operating systems in use by modern computers today. These include a variety of Apple, Windows and Linux flavors. The advent of faster computer hardware and greater memory capacity has allowed for the use of computer "virtualization" software, such as VMware.

  1. "VMware" Brand Name

    • The software producer known as VMware uses a name that is a shortened combination of multiple words commonly used to describe the type of software the company makes. The company makes "virtual machine software" and the company name is based on this.

    Virtual Machine Software Basics

    • Virtual machine software is used to emulate computer hardware inside of a computer's operating system. This means that virtual machine software running inside a computer operating system, such as Windows, appears to be computer hardware to an operating system running inside the virtual machine software.

    Parallel Operating Systems

    • Virtual machine software allows a computer user to run multiple operating systems simultaneously and this can be truly beneficial for a variety of reasons, depending on a computer user's purposes. One example is for the purpose of running software specific to a certain type of proprietary computer, such as software made for an Apple computer, on a standard PC.

    Enterprise Virtualization

    • Virtual machine software is also used in many organizations for the purpose of easier network computing. A server on a network can allow for a computer user to log in to computers at various locations in a company and send their custom operating system to the computer they are logged on to. Each client computer runs a small installation of Linux or a similar efficient operating system and virtual machine software on top of it.

    Virtual Machine Software Possibilities

    • Virtual machine software can do some surprising things. Imagine, for instance, running an Apple operating system inside of Windows 7 and a Sun Solaris operating system inside of that. Many more levels of such computer virtualization are actually possible.
