What Is a Depth Inlay for an Orthopedic Shoe?

A depth inlay is an insert for orthopedic shoes to adjust the shoes to individual needs. This allows you to use mass-produced orthopedic shoes instead of custom-made orthopedic shoes.

  1. Orthopedic Shoes

    • An orthopedic shoe is footwear designed for the needs of people with painful, injured or deformed feet or people with poor circulation in their feet, such as diabetics.

    Inlay

    • The inlay is shaped like the insole of a shoe, but it is removable and can be inserted into the shoe and placed over the insole to allow for depth adjustments of up to a half-inch.

    Material

    • The inlay is made of soft, resilient synthetic material to provide extra cushioning, shock absorbency and comfort.

    Adjustable

    • A depth inlay allows the shoe to be adjusted in cases where a gradual change in size or shape is required.

    Size Difference

    • Depth inlays also allow shoe sizes to be adjusted for a person with two different foot sizes, so that custom shoes are not required.

    Easier Fitting

    • Inlays can be used in a doctor's office to find the right adjustment to the insole. Then, if desired, the correct inlay can be permanently glued into the shoe.
