Formaldehyde Free Keratin Treatment

Keratin straightening treatments also moisturize.

Several companies make formaldehyde-free keratin treatments for straightening hair temporarily. They claim to be a healthier, less risky option to the Brazilian Keratin Treatment and other similar processes that utilize formaldehyde or its derivatives to alter the hair's disulfide bonds. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. How It Works

    • Unlike their formaldehyde-containing counterparts, these keratin treatments are more like intense, thermal-activated conditioning treatments, according to manufacturers. The keratin formula works with a blow dryer and 450 degree flat iron to temporarily alter the hair's shape.

    Veneer

    • Keratin treatments do not break the hair's chemical bonds from within, but instead, coat the outside of the shaft with a liquid form of keratin that mimics the hair's natural and dominant protein.

    Claims

    • A popular brand of formaldehyde-free keratin smoothing complex claims the system "infuses" keratin into the hair cuticle, eliminating up to 95 percent of the frizz and all of the curl. Salons that perform the process say the keratin adheres to the cuticles' rough edges, thereby retaining moisture and shine.

    Warning

    • According to the manufacturer of a formaldehyde-containing keratin product, formaldehyde goes by names of its derivatives, such as quaternium-15, formalin, methanol, methyl aldehyde, imidazolidinyl urea diazolidinyl, morbicid acid and oxymethylene, among others. Consumers are urged to check the ingredients at their salon and on the packaging.

    Post Treatment

    • Formaldehyde-free keratin treatments keep hair straight for weeks to months, depending on the hair's natural texture, maintenance and the amount it's washed. Sodium chloride-free shampoo is necessary to help maintain the effects of keratin.
