What Is the Difference Between a Toy Pomeranian & a Pomeranian?

Size is important when it comes to one of America's most-loved dogs, the Pomeranian. Considered a lap-sized dog, the Pomeranian is best known for his outgoing personality and beautiful double coat of fur.

Standard of Size

The American Kennel Club (AKC) recognizes Pomeranians to be a "toy breed."

Identification

The AKC standard or toy Pomeranian is the result of a breeder selecting and mating together the smallest Pomeranians from two separate litters. According to the AKC, a toy Pom should weigh 3 to 7 pounds by adulthood, with the ideal weight for a show dog from 4 to 6 pounds.

Types

If a Pom hasn't been bred according to AKC standards, offspring may result in a larger size dog, sometimes being referred to as a "Spitz," weighing anywhere from 8 to 30 pounds.

Size aside, all Poms generally share the same characteristics regarding their physical structure and temperament.

Considerations

Because of their overall smaller size compared to other breeds, Pomeranians are suitable for apartment living and cost significantly less to keep.
