Osteoporosis in Cats

While it is well known that osteoporosis is a concern for older humans, this same loss of bone density can also affect our feline friends. Osteoporosis in cats may occur due to some medications, as a result of poor diet, or simply due to age.

  1. What Is Osteoporosis?

    • Osteoporosis is a medical term used to describe a loss of bone density over time. Loss of bone density can increase the risk of fractures or breaks.

    Diet

    • A diet rich in vitamins and minerals can ensure life-long bone density. Your veterinarian can help you design an improved diet plan to keep your cat's bones strong.

    Age

    • The older your cat is, the more of a concern osteoporosis will be. Most mammals lose bone density over time.

    Steroid Use

    • If your cat is on oral steroids for another medical condition, this can contribute to loss of bone density.

    Diagnosis

    • Ask your vet if your cat is at risk for osteoporosis. Diagnosing osteoporosis can be easily done after your cat undergoes a bone density test.
