What Is the Flap of Gum Around a Wisdom Tooth?

A flap of gum around a wisdom tooth is the result of a condition called pericoronitis. It can occur when there's not enough room in a person's mouth for their wisdom teeth to grow.

  1. Identification

    • When a wisdom tooth cannot fully erupt, or grow in completely, it can inflame near gum tissue. This can create a flap of tissue around the tooth.

    Symptoms

    • Symptoms of pericoronitis include pain when biting down, discharge near the affected tooth, swelling of the jaw and a bad smell in the mouth.

    Warning

    • A flap of gum tissue near a partially erupted wisdom tooth can be a breeding ground for bacteria, as it's easy for food particles to become trapped under the tissue.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Symptoms usually improve within one week with saltwater rinses and antibiotics. Good oral hygiene also ensures that food does not become trapped under the flap of gum tissue.

    Expert Insight

    • If symptoms do not improve, consider consulting your dentist. In some cases, the flap of gum tissue--or even the wisdom tooth itself--may need to be removed.
