What Are the Benefits of Compression Stockings?

Compression stockings are tight fitting stockings that are either knee high or thigh high. Your physician will determine which length is best for you.

How They Work

Compression stockings are carefully measured to fit the patient. The stockings apply graduated pressure to the patient's legs. The pressure helps to improve the flow of blood through the veins.

Uses

Compression stockings are most commonly used to prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT). This is a condition in which blot clots form deep in the veins of the legs. These blot clots could be dangerous if they travel to the heart and could cause sudden death due to pulmonary embolism.

Dangers of DVT

DVT is most likely to occur when someone is inactive for a long period of time or has surgery.

Benefits to Athletes

In a study published in the "Journal of Sports Scientists," researchers found that "wearing graduated compression stockings during a 10-km road run appears to reduce delayed-onset muscle soreness after exercise in recreationally active men." They did not find a benefit for men who did only short sprints.

Warning

If you do not understand the way compression stockings work, you may think they are too tight and not wear them. Consult a physician before making the decision to discontinue use of compression stockings.
