Synthetic Vs. Down Pillows
Synthetic and down pillows are two different options for bed pillows. How to choose between the two types will depend on what you find comfortable and whether you prefer natural or man-made materials. Does this Spark an idea?
-
Function
-
Both synthetic and down are types of pillow fills that are encased in a tick, or covering. The fill and the tick are then covered with a pillowcase for sleeping or a bed sham for decoration.
Features
-
Down is made from the undercoat of geese and fowl. Since it is a poultry by-product, it is generally more sustainable than most synthetic pillows, which have a polyester or foam latex filling.
-
Size
-
Both synthetic and down pillows are available in various sizes. Standard-size pillows measure 20 by 26 inches, queen-size pillows measure 20 by 30 inches and king-size pillows measure 20 by 36 inches. European bed pillows measure 27 by 27 inches.
Benefits
-
A down filling is beneficial to those who prefer a softer pillow, as the filling compresses more easily than a synthetic filling. However, down pillows will require some plumping and fluffing after each use to retain their shape. Synthetic pillows are available in firmer styles and will spring back into shape after use, which will keep pillows looking crisp.
Pillow Test
-
According to Dr. James Maas, a professor and sleep researcher at Cornell University, you can test to see if your pillow is too old by folding it in half. If it doesn't pop back into shape right away, then it's time to replace it.
