What Are the Treatments for Forearm Muscle & Tendon Injuries?
The forearm is a complex network of muscles and tendons originating in the elbow and attaching to the wrist and fingers. Pain and injury can occur in the elbow region, the belly of the forearm muscles or the wrist region. Treatment depends on the cause and site of specific pain.
-
Tennis Elbow
-
Tennis elbow pain originates at the outside of the elbow and radiates down the forearm. Injury occurs from repetitive rotation of the forearm as well as repetitive flexing at the elbow. Treatments commonly include rest, ice or heat, ultrasound treatment, bracing and physical therapy.
Golfer's Elbow
-
Golfer's elbow pain originates at the inside of the elbow and radiates down the forearm. Causes and treatments are similar to those for tennis elbow.
-
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
-
According to the Mayo Clinic, carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when inflammation of tissue in the wrist creates pressure on the median nerve causing pain in the wrist, hands and forearm. Treatment can include wrist bracing, anti-inflammatory medications, cortisone injections or surgery in severe cases.
Muscle Strain
-
Forearm muscles can pull or tear with sudden force, impact or repetitive over-use. Mild strain can be treated with rest and pain medications. Severe tears usually indicate with swelling, bruising and the inability to utilize the wrist or hands without severe pain. Ruptures or tears may require surgery.
Prevention
-
Proper technique in sports using the wrist or elbows as well as warm up and stretching of the elbows, wrists and hands can assist in reducing injury. Strengthening the forearm muscles with proper exercise can reduce muscle strain and help protect wrist and elbow tendons.
