Live Vs. Independent Rear Suspension

While most cars now come with an independent front suspension that allows for the left and right wheels to operate over different surfaces, some still use a live or solid axle in the rear.

  1. Basics

    • Between the chassis, or frame, of the car and its wheels lies the suspension, which allows the wheels to operate somewhat independently of the rest of the car and provide balance.

    Live Axle

    • A live axle is a single piece of metal that connects both rear wheels to the drive train and provides power in rear wheel drive vehicles.

    Independent Rear Suspension

    • An independent rear suspension has two shafts, one powering each wheel while the differential that distributes power to the shafts is welded to the chassis.

    Advantages

    • A live axle is simpler in construction and to repair, and is more inexpensive than alternatives. An independent rear suspension offers a smoother ride and can be modified for some characteristics.

    Disadvantages

    • The IRS is more complex than a live axle, and as a result weighs more. On the other hand, a car with a live axle will have both rear wheels react if one is on an uneven surface.
