Why Do Car Batteries Explode?

Though it doesn't happen often, car batteries can explode. The battery gives off hydrogen gas when it's charging. Jump-starting, in particular, charges the battery rapidly and a spark from the jumper cable can ignite the hydrogen.

  1. Battery

    • A car battery is a sealed plastic box containing lead plates and sulfuric acid. Chemical reactions take place in the battery, storing and releasing electricity.

    Hydrogen

    • The battery may give off hydrogen gas while it's being charged. Sparks can ignite hydrogen.

    Explosion

    • The explosion is moderate, but it may rupture the battery's plastic case. It will spray sulfuric acid, which could seriously injure your skin and eyes.

    Jump-Starting

    • When jump-starting your car with another, you connect the batteries in a parallel circuit. The last connection you make completes the circuit and may give off a spark. A spark near the battery could set off an explosion.

    Prevention

    • To correctly connect two batteries, first connect the positive terminals with the jumper cable. Make the last connection to a metal bolt or other electrical ground well away from the battery.

    Connections

    • To prevent sparking, make sure the jumper cables and connections are strong and stable. Keep them away from belts, fans and other moving engine parts.
