Do Apples Promote Hair Growth?
For years, scientists have conducted research to find more botanical extracts that help promote healthy hair growth. They now consider apples a potential source for valuable chemicals that can slow hair loss and stimulate growth. Does this Spark an idea?

Hair Growth
-
Hair growth is a two-part process consisting of an anagen phase of active growth and a telogen resting phase. The hair is constructed in two main parts: a follicle beneath the scalp that determines hair's growth and the protein shaft protruding above the scalp surface, which is essentially dead skin. A prolonged resting phase and natural hair shedding can cause thinning and balding.
Polyphenols
-
Apple polyphenols extracts are potent antioxidants present in the skin of unripened apples. In clinical trials, the polyphenol procyanidin B-2, specifically, prolonged the hair's growth phase and shortened the follicles' resting phase resulting in increased hair growth.

Vitamins
-
Apples contain several vitamins that promote overall good health. Those most relevant to hair growth and follicle stimulation are: Vitamin A, E and B vitamins. Vitamin A helps maintain healthy levels of sebum oil production in the follicles; E promotes good circulation and blood flow to the scalp, and B-6 produces melanin for healthy hair color.
Minerals
-
Apples contain potassium, iron, magnesium, calcium, and copper, all of which are beneficial to the hair by promoting growth, preventing loss and maintaining a healthy scalp.
Topical and Oral
-
Oral apple Polyphenol extract is available in capsules. Sprays and shampoos also contain the chemical for topical application.
