Long-Term Effects of Triptan

Triptans are a class of drugs called serotonin receptor agonists. They are used for the treatment of migraine headaches. Their effectiveness must be balanced with their potential side effects.

  1. Function

    • Triptans relieve migraine symptoms by reducing the size of blood vessels in the brain and alleviating swelling.

    Effectiveness

    • Generally, triptans treat migraines well, especially if taken at the onset of the headache. A trial-and-error approach is used to determine which triptan drug is best. A triptan which alleviates pain for one person may not be effective for another.

    Side Effects

    • When taken as directed, triptans produce side effects such as tingling, dizziness, drowsiness, weakness and a bitter taste in throat.

    Long-Term Effects

    • Taking triptans for an extended period of time can produce a chronic condition called rebound headaches. It is an intense headache which occurs after the triptan has worn off. It can lead to dependency on triptans or other pain medication.

    Considerations

    • If you are allergic to triptans or are taking SSRIs or SNRIs, avoid using a triptan. If you have heart conditions, liver problems or a history of strokes, triptans may not be suitable for you.
