What Are the Notes on a Bass Guitar?
The notes on a bass guitar are arranged chromatically, in the same fashion as on a guitar or keyboard. Each fret on the bass represents one-half step in the chromatic musical scale, which includes all the possible musical notes.

Chromatic Scale
-
The chromatic scale starting in E, the lowest note on bass guitar, are as follows: E, F, F#/Gb, G, G#/Ab, A, A#/Bb, B, C, C#/Db, D, D#/Eb, and finally back to E. Notes separated by slashes are the exact same notes, but are named differently within written musical contexts.
Fourth String Notes
-
The fourth (E or thickest) string on the bass, starting from the open string and progressing on one fret intervals up to the fifth fret, contains the following notes: E (open), F (first fret), F# or Gb (second fret), G (third fret), G# or Ab (fourth fret), and A (fifth fret). Notes on higher frets can be figured out by following the chromatic scale, starting on A#/Bb on the sixth fret on the E string.

Third String Notes
-
The third (A) string, starting from the open string up to the fifth fret, contains the following notes: A (open), A# or Bb (first fret), B (second fret), C (third fret), C# or Db (fourth fret), and D (fifth fret). Notes on higher frets can be figured out by following the chromatic scale, starting on D#/Eb on the sixth fret on the A string.
Second String Notes
-
The second (D) string on the bass, starting from the open string up to the fifth fret, contains the following notes: D (open), D# or Eb (first fret), E (second fret), F (third fret), F# or Gb (fourth fret), and G (fifth fret). Notes on higher frets can be figured out by following the chromatic scale, starting on G#/Ab on the sixth fret on the D string.
First String Notes
-
The first (G) string on the bass, starting from the open string up to the fifth fret, contains the following notes: G (open), G# or Ab (first fret), A (second fret), A# or Bb (third fret), B (fourth fret), and C (fifth fret). Notes on higher frets can be figured out by following the chromatic scale, starting on C#/Db on the sixth fret on the G string.
