A Pesticide?

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), a pesticide is anything that specifically acts to kill pests, including microorganisms, fungi and mold.

What Is Bleach?

Chlorine bleach is a mixture of water and sodium hypochlorite. The EPA states that typical sodium hypochlorite content in liquid bleach is approximately 5.25 percent.

Common Symptoms of Bleach Exposure

Skin irritation and discoloration are known effects of bleach exposure. The EPA advises that bleach exposure to the eyes can cause blindness. If ingested, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) warns that concentrated forms of chlorine bleach can be very dangerous and that immediate medical attention is necessary.

A Word of Caution

Never mix chlorine bleach with ammonia. The NIH advises that this common cleaning mishap can produce toxic fumes that can seriously damage the lungs and in some cases cause death.

How to Protect Your Family

Always keep chemical cleaners sealed and out of the reach of children. Store properly labeled in appropriate containers. When using bleach, always wear gloves and be diligent in how you handle the chemical during pouring.
