Who Manufactures the Cooper Automobile?
The Mini Cooper, a small car with flat top and sides, has undergone changes in ownership over the years since it was first made in the late 1950s. Today the British make is manufactured by BMW.

The First Mini

The first Mini was designed by Sir Alec Issigonis. It was known as the Austin Seven.
The Mini Cooper

John Cooper, a British race car manufacturer, racer and team owner, revamped the Austin, turning it into a sporty racing model, and gave it his name. The Mini Cooper won three World Rally Championships in the 1960s.

Production Hiatus

The original Mini Cooper went out of production in 1971, but Cooper kept the name. Carmakers Rover of England and BMW of Germany began producing Minis again in 1990.
The Mini Today

BMW took over sole production for the Mini Cooper in 1999, and sold Rover the following year. It is made at BMW's Oxford Plant
John Cooper Model

BMW has named one of its Minis the John Cooper Works, after Cooper and his original car company, John Cooper Works. The Cooper company now makes bicycles.
