What Are the Causes of Ick in Fish?

What Are the Causes of Ick in Fish? thumbnail
Ick is the most common disease for aquarium fish.

Ick is the most common disease affecting freshwater fish kept in aquariums. Although possibly fatal, several treatments are available. They must be properly administered or serious problems will result for fish and any other tank inhabitants.

  1. The Parasite

    • White spot disease, a potentially fatal condition also known as ick, is caused by ichthyophthirius multifiliis, a ciliate parasitical protozoan. Fish that are stressed, undernourished or already sick are more prone to infection from this common parasite.

    Time Frame

    • Newborn ick parasites can spread easily from fish to fish within a tank or holding pond. Free swimming young must infect a fish within 48 hours or they will not survive.

    Symptoms

    • Irritation, weakness, loss of appetite, paleness, swelling, lethargy and the appearance of white spots on the skin or gills are symptoms.

    Quarantine

    • Quarantine is the best defense. Fish should be kept separate for three days before being introduced to a new tank.

    Types

    • Chemical treatments are effective, but instructions should be carefully followed to prevent further stress or harm to fish.
