Retin-A is a brand name for the topical prescription medication tretinoin. Despite its effectiveness at decreasing the appearance of acne, Retin-A poses a risk of side effects in some patients.

Types of Side Effects

Side effects of Retin-A include skin redness, peeling, dryness, burning, stinging and itching.

Time Frame

The common side effects of Retin-A typically worsen during the second week of treatment and then gradually diminish as your body becomes acclimated to the effects of the drug, explains the U.S. National Library of Medicine.

Interactions

Because the combination has the potential to cause severe skin irritation, avoid using benzoyl peroxide creams, hair removal products, permanent solution or hair dye, skin colognes or astringents that contain alcohol or abrasive skin cleansers on areas of your skin treated with Retin-A, suggests the Mayo Clinic.

Warning

Retin-A increases the sensitivity of your skin to sunlight, warns the Mayo Clinic. Use sunscreen and avoid tanning while using the medication.

Considerations

Since the drug is known to cause birth defects, doctors rarely prescribe Retin-A for use in pregnant women. If you have a history of dermatitis or eczema or if you currently have a sunburn, it might not be safe for you to use Retin-A, cautions the Mayo Clinic.
