Can Keylogger Be Detected by an Antivirus?
Keyloggers are programs or devices that record keystrokes that are typed on the keyboard of an infected computer. Since these keystrokes can contain confidential data such as passwords and user names, identity thieves can use them.
-
Antivirus Software
-
Most antivirus software programs detect keyloggers. Antivirus software may classify keyloggers as "Potentially Malicious Software" or "Potentially Unwanted Software."
Legitimate Uses
-
Sometimes keyloggers may be installed without a user's knowledge by law enforcement authorities in criminal investigations. The authorities obtain warrants or permission to do this, however.
-
Killing Keyloggers
-
Keyloggers are not themselves viruses, but their presence on a computer is a major cause for concern. If you do not remember installing any keyloggers and the antivirus software detects the presence of them, it is OK to have the antivirus software get rid of it.
Software
-
Commercial software such as Norton Internet Security and Webroot Spysweeper are good choices for security software.
In addition to commercial software, programs such as Spybot Search and Destroy, Windows Defender, and PCTools Threatfire detect keyloggers.
Warning
-
Always keep your security software and operating system updated. Avoid questionable websites and never open email attachments without the antivirus software activated.
