Definition

A chisel is a tool with a specifically shaped cutting edge, and a handle which can be tapped with a hammer or mallet. Chisels can be used to cut wood, metal or stone.
Wood
-
Chiseling wood There are many kinds of chisels for use with wood. They come in a variety of widths, from as narrow as ¼ of an inch, to as wide as two inches, and more. Wood chisels have a beveled cutting edge.

Stone
-
Chiseled marble Chisels for working in stone come in a variety of shapes, and are used at different stages of stone carving. Point chisel, flat chisel, and tooth chisel are a few examples. Stone chisels are made of hardened steel.
Metal
-
Small chisel on metal A cold chisel is used for chipping, grooving or shearing metal. It is made of tempered steel and has a less acute cutting angle than other types of chisels.
Maintenance
-
Chisel blades must be kept sharp for best performance. A dull chisel will blemish or bruise stone, chip or gouge wood, and mar steel. Oiling chisels periodically helps ward off rust.
