What Is Severe Acne?

Acne vulgaris, often just called "acne," can occur in four different levels. These levels, called "grades," range from one to four, with level four acne being the most severe. There are several different factors in determining what is severe acne. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Types of Severe Acne

    • There are four types of severe acne: acne conglobata, acne fulminans, gram-negative folliculitis, and nodulocystic acne.

    Identification of Severe Acne

    • Lesser acne forms have small whiteheads and pustules. Severe acne has both of these types of breakouts, in addition to the appearance of nodules and cysts. Often, severe acne is inflamed and red.

    Treatment of Severe Acne

    • Severe acne is usually treated under the care of a dermatologist or other medical professional. Treatment for severe acne can include topical creams, prescription facial products, antibiotics or other medications.

    Severe Acne Warnings

    • Severe acne is prone to leaving scars on the skin. To reduce the likelihood of scars, avoid picking at the skin or attempting to "pop" the acne.

    Causes of Severe Acne

    • Severe acne can be caused by genetics, blocked sebaceous glands, irritated hair follicles, buildup of dead skin cells or other health-related concerns.
