Job Description of a Horse Show Veterinarian
Most likely you will see a listing for the official horse show veterinarian (or veterinary clinic) in the prize list for a horse show recognized by a national-level organization. You may see this in local and regional prize lists, as well.

Hours

Depending on the show, the veterinarian may be on call or expected to be on the showgrounds for the length of the show.
Consultation

The veterinarian is expected to help the horse show management make decisions regarding the health of the competing horses, and to help the judges regarding the health of horses showing.

Services

The veterinarian also treats problems that arise in the show horses, such as lameness or illness, as needed by the competitors.
Laws and Regulations

The veterinarian may be expected to help management uphold laws and regulations related to horse health, such as abuse or ensuring that horses have appropriate paperwork.
Drug Samples

The veterinarian may also be asked to gather random blood and urine samples from the horses for drug testing.
Conflicts

The veterinarian does not, however, perform the roles of the horse show management, judges or any organizations involved in the show.
