A press release can be used to alert the news media to a new product launch or major business news. A standard format is used by public relations professionals.

  1. Release Date

    • The first line of the press release should indicate the date that the information can be released to the public. In most cases, it will read "For Immediate Release."

    Headline

    • The next line should be the headline of the press release. This should clearly state what the article is about and avoid cleverness that leads to ambiguity.

    Place and Date

    • Just under the headline will be the city and state of relevance, as well as the date that the press release is being issued.

    Body

    • The body of the press release should be to the point and succinct. The overall objective of the release should be apparent in the first few sentences.

    Company Information

    • The company information section should include a short background of the company's history, including a web address and contact information.

    Contact Information

    • The contact information should include the person whom the news media should contact for more information. This may be a company representative or an agent of the public relations firm.
