Daimler-Benz and Swiss watchmaker Swatch worked together to create the Smart car in 1994.

The Smart Fortwo, which is available in the United States, has a four-cylinder engine with multi-point fuel injection and a five-speed manual or automatic transmission. It has an overall fuel economy of 36 miles per gallon (mpg), according to the automotive information website Edmunds.com.

A variety of Smart cars have been developed since 1998, beginning with the Smart City Coupe. Other models include the Crossblade, Roadmaster and Forfour.

Smart cars are small, averaging less than 9 feet long and just more than 5 feet in height and width.
