Complications of Gall Bladder Surgery

The gallbladder is an organ that holds and releases bile to aid in digesting food. It's a nonessential organ that your doctor may need to remove if certain problems arise.

  1. Causes

    • If you experience pain from gallstones or swelling of the gallbladder, your doctor may recommend that you have surgery to remove the gallbladder.

    Types

    • The two types of gallbladder surgery are laparoscopic and open surgery. With laparoscopic surgery, your doctor removes the gallbladder through several small incisions. With open surgery, your doctor removes it through one large incision.

    Complications

    • Complications that may occur from of gallbladder surgery include infection in the wound, injury to the bile duct, injury to the small intestine and bleeding. Another surgery may be necessary if some of these complications occur.

    Recovery

    • If you have laparoscopic surgery, you can usually go home the day of the surgery. For open surgery, you may have to stay in the hospital for two to six days after surgery.

    Considerations

    • Diarrhea is a complication that may arise after gallbladder surgery because of the extra bile released, which acts as a laxative. If you're experiencing chronic diarrhea, talk to your doctor about taking medications to limit bile absorption.
