The differences between Linux and Microsoft Web hosting begin with the operating system the Web server is running. The Microsoft Web server runs on a version of the Windows operating system, while the Linux Web server runs on one of the Linux distributions.

- Both platforms support applications and languages such as PHP, mySQL, POP3 and Python. Microsoft proprietary applications such as Access, Frontpage, Active Server Pages (ASP) and Visual Basic Scripts are only supported by Microsoft Web Hosting.

- Linux and Apache have an open-source license. Windows and IIS are proprietary products licensed by Microsoft.
