Silicone Treatment for Acne Scars

Acne scars are unique compared to other scars in that they create depressions in the skin. Silicone treatment is one method for reducing the appearance of acne scarring. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Considerations

    • As of late 2009, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not yet specifically approved the use of silicone to treat acne scars, however, physicians are licensed to use silicone agents for this purpose "off label."

    Features

    • Silicone treatment of acne scarring involves the use of injectable dermal fillers. The filler agent, silicone, is a gel-like substance inserted into the skin layers by a needle.

    How It Works

    • Microdroplets of silicone injections work from the inside out, plumping the skin to "fill in" the scars. These injections are used to rebuild tissue in the treated skin sites by stimulating collagen production.

    Results

    • Repeat treatments with small quantities of injectable silicone are intended to yield permanent removal of acne scars, so that skin is smooth and even. The American Chronicle reports that a 30-year study showed the method was effective, and results were sustained.

    Side Effects and Complications

    • Side effects of the silicone filler may include redness, swelling and bruising. Complications may include overcorrection, discoloration (in thin scars) and firm texture.

    Controversy

    • Silicone injectables have been controversial. The 5th Avenue Dermatology Surgery and Laser Center in New York reports that this is because of a historical illegal misuse of non-medical grade quality silicone that caused reported adverse side effects. The NY Center indicates that silicone is, in fact, an ubiquitous agent that is one of the most non-reactive substances in the world.
