The History of Oils as Aphrodisiacs thumbnail
Men and women have been using aphrodisiacs for thousands of years to attract the opposite sex.

Oils have been used for centuries to increase the attraction between a man and a woman. Many believe these essential oils, the concentrated "essence" of a flower, spice or herb, have aphrodisiac properties.

  1. Cleopatra

    • Cleopatra reportedly used essential oils from red roses and jasmine to enhance her libido. According to Lindisima.com, she also took baths in milk and rose petals.

    Jasmine

    • Jasmine essential oil has been a popular aphrodisiac in India for centuries. Women traditionally put some in their hair before going to bed with their husbands to encourage love making.

    Vanilla

    • Before European contact, native groups in Central America used vanilla essential oils to attract the opposite sex. Vanilla was very precious in their culture.

    Ylang Ylang

    • Ylang ylang, a sweet smelling flower, was used as an aphrodisiac in Ancient China.

    Oils Today

    • Today all of these ancient aphrodisiac essential oils can be found in candles, massage oils and bath oils. Rich, warm scents are most likely to encourage romance.
