Complications of a Ventral Hernia

Inguinal hernia, commonly referred to as ventral hernia, occurs when part of the intestines pushes though the abdominal wall. The most serious problem caused by inguinal hernia is a loop of the intestine gets trapped in a weak section of the abdomen.

  1. Strangulation

    • If a section of the intestines becomes trapped in the abdomen wall, strangulation can occur, cutting off blood supply to the intestines.

    Incarcerated Hernia

    • Incarcerated hernia can occur if the loop of the intestines is trapped. This can lead to bowel obstruction and can cause excruciating pain.

    Large Hernias

    • When an inguinal hernia becomes too enlarge, complications can arise if they are not surgically repaired. Large hernias in men can push into the males scrotum, causing swelling and pain.

    Herniorrhaphy

    • Herniorrhaphy requires a surgical incisions to the groin area. The surgeon then pushes the loop of intestine back into your abdomen. He will then repair the torn muscle by sewing it back in place.

    Hernioplasty

    • Hernioplasty repair requires the surgeon to make many small incisions by placing a fiber-optic tube into your abdomen and repairing the hernia.
