Darvocet and hydrocodone are mild narcotics used for pain management. They're both potentially habit forming drugs, but much less so than stronger narcotics like oxycodone. Although they are in the same family of pharmaceuticals, their chemical composition is different.

    Darvocet

  1. Darvocet is a brand name drug that contains propoxyphene and acetaminophen. Acetaminophen is a mild pain reliever used as a catalyst to boost the body's reaction to propoxyphene.
  2. Hydrocodone

  3. Hydrocodone is a generic drug combined with acetaminophen for pain relief sold under brand names such as Vicodin and Lortab. As in Darvocet, the acetaminophen is used to increase the effectiveness of hydrocodone.
  4. Side Effects

  5. Both drugs have similar possible side effects, including confusion, liver problems, stomach disorders, dizziness and in extreme cases, seizures.
  6. Drug Enforcement Agency

  7. The DEA lists frequently abused drugs as "Drugs and Chemicals of Concern" on its website. Hydrocodone is listed, but Darvocet isn't.
  8. Prescription Guidelines

  9. According to Drugs.com, Darvocet is used to treat "mild to moderate pain," but hydrocodone is prescribed for "moderate to severe pain."
