What Are the Symptoms for a UTI for a Dog?
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) in dogs have a variety of symptoms that are quite easy to recognize. If your dog has the following symptoms, take it to the vet for a diagnosis and to initiate treatment promptly.
-
Frequent Urination
-
Dogs with a UTI will want to go outside more often. Perhaps the most common symptom observed in dogs affected by a UTI is frequent urination. The dog often will pace in front of the door asking to go out more than usual.
Abnormal Urination
-
Dogs might urinate a few drops at a time. The affected dog also will squat and strain, producing only a few drops of urine at a time. This abnormal urine flow is typical of a UTI.
-
Painful Urination
-
Dogs might whine or yelp as they urinate. This is due to the burning sensation from the UTI, which also can cause dogs to lick their genitals for relief.
Increased Drinking
-
Watch for drinking more than usual. Dogs with a UTI have a tendency to drink more. This is the body's attempt to flush out harmful bacteria and compensate for the increased urination .
Bloody Urine
-
Blood might be found on the floor. At times, the urine emitted might contain blood, or traces of of blood might be found on the floor and in places the dog tends to frequent.
Considerations
-
Urine should be fresh for an accurate test. When you take your dog to the vet, you probably will need to supply a fresh urine sample collected in a sterile container. The vet will test the sample to confirm the presence of a urinary tract infection and initiate treatment.
