Firewood: Cords Vs. Face Cords

There are several different ways to present and measure firewood. Although firewood can be weighed to determine quantity, it is most often measured by "cord" or "face cord" units. But cords and face cords are completely different units.

Cubic Measurement of a Cord

  • Firewood must be cleanly stacked into a rectangular structure to qualify as a cord. This stack must measure 128 cubic inches.

Typical Dimensions of a Cord

  • A cord typically measures 4 feet high, 4 feet wide and 8 feet long.

Cord Density

  • In order to qualify as a cord, the individual wood logs must be stacked parallel to each other and as compactly as possible. There must not be apparent gaps in the wood stack.

Face Cord Cubic Measurement

  • A face cord is not measured according to area in cubic inches and is not an exact measurement.

Face Cord Stacking Dimensions

  • A face cord is 4 feet high and 8 feet long, but the depth may vary. The wood used for this single-row firewood stack is typically 12-20 inches.

Face Cord Density

  • Like a true cord, firewood logs must be stacked compactly to qualify as a face cord. No apparent gaps in the stack can be present.
