What Are Rubber Pants?
For many years, rubber pants have been a standard in the field of diaper covers and adult incontinence products, providing an alternative to disposable diapers.
-
Uses
-
Rubber pants, occasionally referred to as "rubber panties," were commonly used as a garment to cover cloth diapers and prevent leakage. They were also often used as adult incontinence protection garments, where they were commonly called "rubber bloomers."
Design
-
Rubber pants, for use over diapers, came in two types. One was made of natural rubber and had gathers at the waist and legs. The pants were oversize so that air could circulate in them. The other form was made from latex and designed to stretch and fit snugly over the diaper, leaving no room for air to circulate.

Replacement
-
By the 1950s, rubber pants were no longer a popular choice for diaper covers, although they still retained some popularity for adult incontinence protection. Today, they have mostly been replaced by plastic pants or those made from waterproof textiles.
Adult Incontinence
-
For many years, the use of rubber pants has allowed adults who have needed to use them an economical alternative to disposable adult undergarments, such as Depends.
Concerns
-
Although rubber pants can effectively stop leaks from cloth diapers and undergarments, they aren't flawless. If improperly sized, the wearer might experience loss of circulation to the legs. Also, most designs don't allow for ventilation, which may contribute to diaper rash.
