The file extension Vcf represents the vCard, a popular digital business card that has been in use since the late 1990s. Users commonly attach Vcfs to emails, although they may also be transmitted via other means.

The Versit Consortium, which included IBM, Apple, Lucent and Siemens, developed the Vcf file format or vCard. The Versit Consortium released Vcf 2.1 file specifications in 1996.

The Vcf file extension enjoys a wide range of support and can be opened on Linux, Windows and Mac computers. Email clients, including Microsoft Outlook and Mozilla Thunderbird, accept and read vCards.
Blackberry and Bluetooth

Blackberry Internet Service users also utilize vCards for exchanging personal data between mobile devices. Any mobile device that features Bluetooth may be used to transmit Vcfs to other devices.

Vcfs may include phone numbers, addresses, social network usernames, website links and images.
Types

The Vcf file extension also acts as a saved VirtualDub settings file. VirtualDub, a video capture and video processing program, must be installed to use these Vcf files.
