What is Sodium Laureth Sulfate?

Sodium laureth sulfate is a chemical with the molecular formula C12H25NaO4S. It is the sodium salt of lauryl sulfate, which is the sulfate of lauryl alcohol. It is an organic sulfate salt.

Uses

Sodium laureth sulfate is a surfactant, a detergent, an emulsifier, a wetting agent, a dispersing agent, a foaming agent and a whipping agent in things such as shampoo, detergent, cream, lotion, toothpaste, foods, hair dye, varnish, paint remover, insecticide and solid rocket propellant.

Appearance

Sodium laureth sulfate is supplied as white to cream-colored crystals, flakes and powder.

Irritant

Sodium laureth sulfate is a skin and eye irritant; however, when used in formulations that are meant to come in contact with the skin, it is used in very dilute amounts so as not to cause irritation.

Allergen

Sodium laureth sulfate is an allergen in some sensitive people, frequently people with eczema. It can cause allergic skin reactions (red, itchy skin) through skin contact, and may cause allergic respiratory reactions (wheezing, shortness of breath) via inhalation once a person is sensitized to it.

Combustible Solid

Sodium laureth sulfate is a combustible solid that may burn if strongly heated. In dry powder form, it may form explosive dust-air mixtures.
