A normal range for morning blood sugar levels is 70 to 100 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL). This is known as a "fasting" level, since the person has not yet eaten.

Considerations

Once you do eat, normal blood sugar will rise to a level not exceeding 140 mg/dL. This daily range of 70 to 140 mg/dL is the sign of a well-controlled blood sugar level.

Effects

If your blood sugar level drops even 5 mg/dL, to a level of 65 or below, you may start to feel shaky and agitated. This will resolve itself upon eating. A drop under 50 mg/dL may bring on more serious symptoms that require medical attention.

If your blood sugar level rises to a level of 180 or more, your practitioner will find glucose in your urine. A rise over 400 mg/dL may bring on more serious symptoms that require medical attention.
