Differences Between a White Nursing Uniform & a Scrub Suit

Nursing is one of the many professions that requires a specific uniform. Based on the medical facility's dress codes, nurses will be asked to wear either a white nursing uniform or a scrub suit when they report for work.

  1. Structure

    • The structure of a white nursing uniform tends to be more formal than that of a scrub suit. Nursing uniforms rely on crisp, clean lines; the shirts are usually collared and the pants or skirts should be neatly pressed. Scrub suits have a completely different look; they are casual and relaxed. Scrub shirts are not collared and the pants are often loose-fitting.

    Color

    • White nursing uniforms are bleached regularly to ensure a bright white color. Scrub suits, however, come in a variety of colors. The hospital or medical facility will determine which color scrubs employees are allowed to wear. While some hospitals allow nurses to wear any color, other facilities have strict dress codes.

    Design

    • White nursing uniforms do not have any patterns or designs. Scrubs can be purchased in a variety of designs and patterns, including cartoon characters, sports logos, flowers and polka dots.

    Material

    • Nursing uniforms and scrubs are typically made from a combination of polyester and cotton to ensure easy care and durability.

    Professionalism

    • White nursing uniforms tend to portray a much more professional appearance in the medical setting, while the relaxed fit and bright colors of scrub suits look more casual.
