Side Effects of Doryx Medication

Doryx is a prescription medication used to treat bacterial infections of the skin. Despite its effectiveness, Doryx has the potential to cause side effects in some users.

Most Common Symptom

The most common side effect of Doryx is increased sensitivity to the sun. Because of this, it is important to use sunscreen and avoid tanning beds while taking the drug.

Less Common Symptoms

Drospirenone also causes a number of other less common, but not dangerous, side effects. These include loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, difficulty swallowing and the appearance of brown spots on your thyroid that have no impact upon the functioning of the gland.

Drug Interactions

When combined with blood thinners like Warfarin, Doryx increases your risk of extended bleeding due to injuries or surgery. The combination of Doryx and the general anesthetic Penthrane causes kidney inflammation in some patients.

Risks

Doryx causes increases of pressure inside the skull of some patients, causing a risk of permanent loss of vision. Some patients develop gastrointestinal ulcers.

Considerations

Children who use Doryx often suffer from stunted growth or permanent discoloration of the teeth. Because the effects of Doryx upon fetuses are unknown, doctors typically do not prescribe the drug for pregnant women.
