How Much RAM Does a Computer Need?

The amount of RAM a computer needs depends on the function of the computer and the needs of a user. Casual home users simply surfing the Internet or playing games like Solitaire obviously won't need as much RAM as a business user or advanced gamer.

  1. Basic Tasking

    • If your primary use for the computer is surfijng the Web or checking email, then 1 or 2 gigabytes of RAM is sufficient, even if you want to do both at once.

    Gaming

    • Gamers need more memory than average consumers to run powerful games and heavy graphics. At least 4 gigabytes is recommended for system memory for advanced gamers.

    Multimedia

    • Multimedia users (photos, videos/movies, music) can get by with 2 or 3 gigabytes if simply viewing or listening to data. Once you start getting into data editing, it's advisable to increase your RAM by twice the computer's original amount for optimal performance.

    Multi-Tasking

    • Users who like to use two or three or more programs at once should have at least 3 gigabytes of RAM.

    Tip

    • When looking to upgrade RAM, a general rule of them is to go with at least twice as much as you currently have. Adding a little at a time may not be make a difference, but doubling the RAM will give you a noticeable--and often satisfying--performance increase.
