Epsom Salt for Infection

Epsom salt, or magnesium sulphate, is commonly used to treat minor infections on hands, feet or other external body parts by dehydrating, or drawing out, the infection.

  1. History

    • According to the Epsom Salt Council, Epsom salt got the first part of its name from the discoveries of magnesium sulphate during the late 1500s in Epsom, England.

    Features

    • An Epsom salt soak can help treat minor skin infections from cuts, splinters or acne. In addition, the Epsom Salt Council suggests using Epsom salt as a beauty treatment to smooth skin and reduce cellulite. Epsom salt baths also help the body absorb the magnesium in the salts, which is vital to many bodily functions like muscle control, nerve function, circulatory health and the elimination of harmful toxins.

    Treatments

    • To treat an infection on the hands or feet with Epsom salt, add a half cup of Epsom salt to a pan of warm water, and soak the hands or feet in the water for at least 10 minutes. If you have a skin infection in a hard-to-reach part of your body, dissolve 2 cups of Epsom salt into warm water in a full bath tub and soak your body for at least 10 minutes.

    Famous Ties

    • Heidi Klum, Kim Kardashian, and Brooke Burke all use Epsom salt as beauty treatments.

    Warning

    • Do not ingest Epsom salt to treat external infections on the skin. Epsom salt can be ingested to treat constipation, but consult the package and/or your doctor for directions.
