Can I Fly My Dog With Me to India & Back?

If you want your dog to accompany you on a flight to India, get to the airport at least three hours before the flight. The airline will have to ensure that you have all of the appropriate documents before your pet is checked onto the plane. India does have specific requirements before your pet can enter the country.

Preparation

Regardless of how small or large your dog is, you will need to have an appropriate crate for it to travel in the plane. Consider inserting a microchip into your pet and giving a sedative to the dog.

Import Permit

India requires that your dog have an import permit before entry. In order to book a flight with your dog, you will need to provide the permit number to the airline.

Vaccinations

Additionally, India does require that your dog have vaccinations for rabies and distemper. Both vaccinations cannot be less than a month old or more than 180 days old.

International Health Certificate

India does require an international health certificate that's less than 10 days old. Additionally, it must indicate your dog does not have Aujeszky's disease, leptospirosis and a negative test result for tuberculosis.

Quarantine

India does not require a quarantine period upon arrival of your pet. However, your dog will be quarantined for a certain amount of time upon arrival back into the United States.
