The HIV/AIDS epidemic has devastated communities and economies in Africa. The disease has erased whole generations on the continent. The progression and transmission of HIV/AIDS is overwhelming in Africa, and the statistics of the disease are startling.

  1. HIV Infection

    • Life expectancy in some Southern African countries 1958 to 2003

      Twenty-two million people in Africa have HIV, representing 2/3 of the total infected population of the world.

    Infection Rates

    • National infection rates for HIV.

      Seven African countries have infection rates about 15 percent of the population: Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

    Deaths

    • Seventy-five percent of the world's AIDS-related deaths occur in Sub-Saharan Africa.

    Transmission

    • The main mode of HIV/AIDS transmission in Africa is heterosexual intercourse. The second-most common mode of transmission is from mother to child, either during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

    Most Affected Country

    • Many Swazi communities have been destroyed by the AIDS epidemic.

      Swaziland has been affected most by the HIV epidemic. The country has a 38.8 percent adult infection rate and a life expectancy of only 39 years.
