How Long Does Smoked Salmon Last?

Save

Smoked salmon is a nice addition in egg dishes or spread over bagels and cream cheese, but storing leftovers might be confusing. Whether hot-smoked or cold-smoked, salmon can be safely stored in the refrigerator or freezer.

Refrigeration

  • Hot-smoked salmon has a slightly higher longevity than cold-smoked salmon. You can safely store it in the refrigerator for one to two weeks. With cold-smoked salmon, you should use it within three days.

Freezing

  • You can prolong the life of your smoked salmon by freezing leftovers for up to one month. Simply place small amounts in plastic freezer baggies and defrost as needed.

Defrosting

  • To defrost frozen smoked salmon, place your baggie in a bowl in the sink and run a steady stream of cold water over the salmon. The fish defrosts quickly so keep an eye on it.

Canned Salmon

  • If you buy canned smoked salmon, your unopened cans will be safe indefinitely in a cupboard. Once opened, consume within three days.

Types

  • If you are unsure of the variety of smoked salmon you have, check the packaging label. Hot-smoked salmon should be labeled as such; lox is cold-smoked.
