History of HD TV

HDTVs have become common place in the homes of many. In fact, virtually every TV sold today is a high-definition display. Let us examine the history of HDTV.

  1. LCD TVs

    • The first LCD TV was invented by George Heilmeier in May of 1968. Mr. Heilmeiers original LCD display, while being a far cry from the large-screen LCD TVs of today, served as the blueprint for all modern LCD HDTVs.

    Plasma TVs

    • The first prototype plasma display was invented by University of Illinois professors Donald Bitzer and Gene Slottow in 1964. However Bitzer and Slottow found few if any practical uses for the technology at that time. Their plasma would serve as the blueprint for future plasma HDTVs.

    Larry Weber

    • Larry Weber, an engineer at the Panasonic, is often referred to as "the father of HDTV." Larry Weber adapted Slottow and Bitzers original design to create the first commercially available plasma HDTV that was brought to market in 1997.

    First HDTV Broadcast

    • The first HDTV broadcast in the United States occurred in the state of North Carolina on July 23, 1996.

    HDTV 720p

    • The first HDTVs were known as 720p displays. These TVs had a resolution of 720 by 1280 pixels. However, better things would soon come.

    1080p

    • 1080p brought significantly improved picture quality. 1080p TVs offer a resolution of 1080 by 1920 pixels. 1080p is sometimes referred to as "True HD."
