Description of a Maine Coon

Maine Coons are one of the largest and oldest breeds of cats. It is the official cat of Maine and is considered a native of the state.

  1. Appearance

    • Maine Coons' fur is heavy and water-resistant. It is longer on the britches, ruff and stomach. They are generally large cats, reaching 14 to 18 pounds, and have big paws and long, bushy tails.

    Coloring

    • The traditional color of the Maine Coon is tabby brown, but the breed comes in almost any color with the exception of Siamese-like pointed colors.

    Temperament

    • Said to be dog-like, these cats are very playful and love to fetch small items. They remain kittenish throughout their lifespans and are very people-oriented.

    Nutrition

    • Breeders feed a high quality dry food and make sure to provide plenty of water. Most cats can free-feed without becoming overweight, but if this becomes an issue, switching to a low-calorie food is usually sufficient.

    Grooming

    • Maine Coons do not usually require much grooming from their owners; a weekly combing session should be sufficient.
