Can You Do Pushups Everyday?

Regular exercise is one of the cornerstones of a healthy lifestyle, but can or should you do push ups everyday? If done in moderation with consideration given to overextending yourself, push ups, as with most exercises, can be done daily. But if your goal is to build muscle mass and bulk up those guns, moderation may be the key.

  1. Benefits

    • Any sort of physical activity that gets you up and moving is beneficial. Exercising regularly --- both cardiovascular exercise and/or weight training --- can result in a healthier body and increased muscle size and strength.

    Negatives

    • It may be argued that there are no negative effects of daily push ups, but you should be aware of the possibility for injury if muscles are overworked or worked improperly.

    Considerations

    • Physical exercise must be done properly to be maximally effective. Check your form while doing push ups or other exercises to ensure the most benefit with the least risk of injury.

    Misconceptions

    • While it may seem logical that the more push ups you do more often, the bigger your arms will grow, in reality the muscles in your arms need time to rest and heal from the work they've been doing. Taking time off to allow muscle to heal, called recovery time, will result in bigger, stronger muscles down the road.

    Warning

    • As with any fitness routine, you should first consult your doctor before you begin. Every individual is different and your doctor may be able to point you in the direction of what type and frequency of workout is best for you. Doing any sort of physical activity without consideration for how your body is feeling will likely result in injuries, which could have life-long effects. It is important to listen to what your body is telling you while exercising.
