Parts of a Ladder

Ladders are an essential part of the creation of new homes and buildings, allowing people to reach places that otherwise would be unreachable. Consisting of a set of inclined rungs, ladders are ancient contraptions known to be more than 10,000 years old. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Rungs

Rungs make up the steps of a ladder. The number of rungs depends on the type of ladder and can range from a small step ladder with three to five rungs to a large extension ladder with more than 100 rungs.

    Step

    • A step ladder is a folding ladder with a hinge near the top for easy storage and transportation. A step ladder is ideal for indoor use because its A-shaped frame is self-sustainable. Step ladders often have a fold down extra step.

    Extension

    • An extension ladder has a sliding ladder within that can be extended via rope and pulleys to nearly double its size. An extension ladder is not self-supporting--it must be leaned up against something. Extension ladders are best suited for outdoor use such reaching the roof of a house. Hooks will often be on the top of an extension ladder to make it easier to latch onto the roof.

    Rope

    • A rope ladder consists of rungs attached to rope and is best for hanging from windows or other areas that one might need to exit. Rope ladders are good for emergencies because they are compact and easy to deploy in instances such as a fire.

    Safety

    • When climbing a ladder higher than you are tall, it is important to have a helper hold the bottom of the ladder to stabilize the ladder.
