Computer Concepts Basics

Although several books could be written about the basics of computers, there are a few general concepts anyone using the machines on a daily or semi-regular basis should know.

  1. Definition

    • A computer is a device that processes tasks. Computers range in size and ability from small calculators to vast mainframes.

    Hardware

    • Hardware refers to the physical parts of a computer. Such items include a monitor, mouse, modem and DVD player, among others.

    Software

    • Software refers to the various programs that allow computers to do different tasks. Microsoft Word and Mozilla Firefox are two examples of software.

    Operating System

    • Every computer has an operating system that allows the user to control the computer. Popular operating systems include Microsoft Windows, OSX and Linux.

    Computer Networks

    • Computers are often networked together in order to share data with one another. The Internet is the biggest computer network in the world.
